Livadi is the main port on Serifos. Serifos is known as the “iron island” as iron or was mined here in the 19th and 20th centuries. The mining finished in the 1960’s and like many islands, tourism, agriculture and fishing are now the economic mainstays.
Livadia is a typical Cycladic village, a mass of whitewashed houses, cafes and tavernas.
The main town, Chora is set on the hill behind the port. It’s a short bus ride and well worth it for the view.
A short walk above Chora are the ruins of a Venetian castle, destroyed by pirates in 1210. If that’s too energetic, the small Folklore and Archaeological museums provide an easier diversion.
If you’re not planning sailing there, take a trip to Megalo Livadi where the old mines and the aerial loading ramp reaching out to sea will appeal to anyone with an interest in industrial history.
But the main attractions of Livadi are the excellent sand beaches nearby. The nearest is just a few hundred metres from the harbour but there are plenty more a short scooter ride away.
