Turkey flotilla holidays

Introduction

Do you dream of sailing in to a bay with nothing more than a single restaurant and a wooden jetty. Then you will love a Turkey flotilla. There’s great sailing on offer with easy and intermediate areas.

Quick Choices - Turkey Flotillas
Difficulty:Easy – 1 & 2 week
Intermediate – 2 week
Vibe:Single restaurant bays. Rugged scenery. Little development outside major resorts.
Can add: Skipper, Crew, RYA & ICC Courses, Bareboat, Hotel

Between the one restaurant bays, there is a smattering of towns and villages. But essentially it’s back to basics, with simple and wholesome food, great sailing and the chance to meet some of the most hospitable people on the planet.

The scenery is dramatic with many cliffs. Better still, apart from the developments near the large resorts of Fethiye, Marmaris and Bodrum, it is remarkably undeveloped, a tribute to tight planning regulation.

The wind pattern is typically light or non existent in the morning, rising in early afternoon, then dropping away, often suddenly, in late afternoon.

Sadly, there are not as many flotillas in Turkey as there used to be. Some years back, the Government banned foreign companies from operating charter yachts there. This forced out all the flotilla companies but one.

Turkey flotilla choices

Currently, all the Turkey flotillas run from Fethiye. Most, including all the one week options are focused in the Gocek/Fethiye Bay, in the easy sailing West Lycian area. However, in high season, there is a two week flotilla that sails all the way west to Datca, between Orhaniye & Bodrum in the Carian region.

If you want a 2 week flotilla in high season the Datca flotilla is better than the Lycian Bay option where you may find it a bit claustrophobic being confined to the bay. Outside high season, those wanting 2 weeks my prefer a week on flotilla then a week bareboat.

The Lycian flotillas are centred around Gocek Bay and adjacent Fethiye Bay. This compact sailing area is ideal for newly qualified skippers or less experienced crews.

The two 1 week routes are similar. The sailing area is sufficiently compact that you can fit in the places you won’t visit in the evenings as lunch stops.

There is a wide selection of yachts available from 32 to 50 feet. These cover a wide range of ages. Most yachts have in mast furling.

However, they only have one of each yacht so if you are particular about what you want then I advise booking early unless you are flexible with you dates.

Whichever route you pick I’m sure you’ll be happy. I was once thanked by a guest for taking them to such nice places but in truth it’s hard not to.
