Gradina is a great bay for that last minute swim before heading into Vela Luka or as an alternative to anchoring or picking up a buoy in the harbour itself. Quite often the overflow of charter yachts from Vela Luka will make their way back out here to Gradina when they find no space on the quay so if you want a buoy it pays to pick one up in the early evening.
Gradina is a peaceful place with a sleepy selection of holiday houses overlooking the bay. There is one restaurant on the eastern side but nothing else in the way of facilities.
The orange buoys that are available for pick up are laid by the harbour authority of Vela Luka and as such come at a cost – 150 kuna for a 12m yacht per night (2015). To anchor will cost you 100 kuna per night (2015). Holding is good if you search for sand but can be rocky on the western edge of the bay. The port authority rib comes out last thing at night to collect their dues.
If you are looking for even more solitude and a free anchorage, the first bay west of Gradina affords better protection from the prevailing winds and good holding in about 8 metres. There are no shops or restaurants in this bay.
