A holiday town particularly popular with Greeks, which has ensured retention of its Greek atmosphere, Efimia is also a good base to explore the Melissani Cave and Lake.
There are a number of white pebbled beaches a short walk south of the town, or if you want to go a little further afield, you can hire motor boat. These are pleasantly unspoilt without the sun loungers and parasols that cover so many beaches these days.
The town itself was once a major commercial centre, before the harbour and many of the surrounding buildings were destroyed in the 1953 earthquake. The rebuilding is not, to my eye, quite as sympathetic as in other places but it’s not unpleasant.
For the energetic, there’s a walking trail across the island to the excellent beach at Myrtos. Other attractions include horse riding from the local stables.
A visit to the impressive Melissani Cave with collapsed roof which spans the Lake is worth it – boat trips are available from the town. In high season, you’ll have to endure the crowds but it’s worth it for the cooling atmosphere.
