The town of Astakos is true Greece. It’s the hub of the local fishing and agricultural industries. There are a few tourists, mostly Greeks but that’s not the place’s raison d’etre.
The town sits at the foot of the Acarnanian Mountains. Some of the town’s ancient history is still traceable, including the Byzantine castle of Dragamestos and the remains of the temple of Zeus and the acropolis.
Astakos has all the facilities you would expect of a small town. There are supermarkets, banks, doctors, pharmacies and of course restaurants, cafes and bats. So it’s a good place to stock up.
Like most places in the Ionian, space is at a premium. However, here you are more likely to be in competition with local fishing boats and vessels that serve the nearby fish farms that proliferate around the Dragonera Islands than other yachts.
