South Dalmatia / Adriatic flotillas

The South Adriatic flotillas cover the southern part of Croatia’s Dalmatia coast and the north part of Montenegro, the Gulf of Kotor.

The flotlllas sail from the historic city of Dubrovnik, heading north and south on alternate weeks. To the north, the Dalmatian coast is strewn with islands.  The area is greener than some parts further north. The flotilla route explores Korcula, Mljet and Lastovo, including the beautiful Mljet National Park. You’ll visit a variety of places, from sleepy villages to small holiday towns.

Heading south, the Adriatic flotillas visit the impressive steep sided Gulf of Kotor. As far as I know, this is currently the only regular flotilla visiting Montenegro. Montenegro is currently experiencing something of a tourist boom and is developing fast but is a little behind Croatia.

These South Adriatic flotillas require only moderate experience. They are ideal for skippers and crews with a trip or two already behind them. To sail yourself, the skipper must hold a recognised skippers certificate (RYA Day Skipper, ICC or similar) and someone on board requires a VHF certificate. These rules apply to all yacht charters in Croatia. However, if you lack teh necessary qualifications, fear not – skippers are available for hire.

    About the Korcula Flotilla

The Korcula flotilla visits the islands north west of Dubrovnik. Many tourists are drawn to Dubrovnik itself. Not so many get to see the outlying islands.

    Dubr'k
Flights from: Gatwick, Heathrow, Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Belfast
Qualifications: to sail yourself: minimum RYA Day Skipper Practical or ICC plus VHF radio certificate. For Montenegro only, one other person with practical or theory skippers certificate
    Other options: Skippers available

The flotilla provides a chance to visit the Mljet National Park at the west end of the island. The park includes a vast acreage of pine and oak forest, two salt water lakes and a 12th century Benedictine monastery. There are also excellent swimming opportunties.

Korcula Luka is the birthplace of Marco Polo and offers the delights of the old town, built in the 13-15th centuries.

If winds are favourable you may get to visit Lastovo. Otherwise there are several alternatives as you head back past Mljet, including a return to the National Parlk at Pomena, the friendly villge of Okuklje and Saplunara with its impressive beach.

    About the Montenegro flotilla

The Montenegro flotilla visits this increasingly popular sailing area. The flotilla starts from Dubrovnik in Croatia so you get to visit two countries.

    Quick Choices - Montenegro Flotilla
    Base:Dubrovnik Difficulty: IntermediateAirport:

The Dubrovnik start gives the opportunity to explore this beautiful historic city. There’s also a practical reason – you can fly direct from several UK airports whereas there are as yet no direct flights from the UK to the Montenegrin bases.

The highlight of the week is a visit to Kotor, set in a stunning fjord-like bay. You can explore the old city and walk the medieval city walls high up the hill behind the town.

Herceg Novi doesn’t have such a dramatic setting but has plenty of history. And along the way you have chance to explore some smaller Montenegrin villages.

If you want a longer trip, there’s a two week flotilla option, giving an extra week in Croatia, or you could spend a second week bareboating around Montenegro.
