Montenegro flotilla – 1 week

About the Montenegro flotilla

The Montenegro flotilla visits this increasingly popular sailing area. The flotilla starts from Dubrovnik in Croatia so you get to visit two countries.

Qualifications: to sail yourself: minimum RYA Day Skipper Practical or ICC plus VHF radio certificate. For Montenegro only, one other person with practical or theory skippers certificate

The Dubrovnik start gives the opportunity to explore this beautiful historic city. There’s also a practical reason – you can fly direct from several UK airports whereas there are as yet no direct flights from the UK to the Montenegrin bases.

The highlight of the week is a visit to Kotor, set in a stunning fjord-like bay. You can explore the old city and walk the medieval city walls high up the hill behind the town.

Herceg Novi doesn’t have such a dramatic setting but has plenty of history. And along the way you have chance to explore some smaller Montenegrin villages.

If you want a longer trip, there’s a two week flotilla option, giving an extra week in Croatia, or you could spend a second week bareboating around Montenegro.

  • Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik is arguably one of the prettiest towns you will visit in Croatia but be warned it is overrun with tourists in July and August at which time the old town can be a very sweaty and aggravating place indeed!  Given a choice I would recommend an early or late season flotilla or bareboat charter if this is all you have come ...

  • Cavtat and Uvala Tiha
Cavtat and Uvala Tiha combine to create a small, laid back tourist village just south of Dubrovnik. It’s a great place to relax and watch the super yachts come and go on the customs quay or treat yourself to an ice-cream while promenading along the wonderful, shady paths that wind around the bays. Twice spared from destruction when war ...

  • Fort Rose
Fort Rose lies at the tip of the Lustica peninsula. It stands guard over the entrance to the Bay of Kotor. As the importance of the fortifications declined, the settlement became just a small fishing village. In more recent times, it has become a rather chic tourist destination. In truth there’s little here; a stoney beach, a ...

  • Kotor
Kotor is a must see on any Montenegro flotilla holiday or yacht charter. Located at the head of a fjord-like bay the scenery is stunning. The town itself is steeped in history and the walls of the old city reach up the mountain side. Kotor dates back to several centuries BC, being originally a Greek settlement. ...

  • Herceg Novi
Herceg Novi is, like most of Montenegro, undergoing something of a tourist boom. It seems to be weathering this better than some of its neighbours. It retains both it’s charm and much evidence of its history. Though Novi means new, this is only relative. The town in fact started life as a fortress in the 14th century. The old ...

More about the flotilla

The nearest airport is Dubrovnik, about 30 minutes drive away from the base, on the other side of the city. Optional airport transfers are available from the flotilla operator.

Dubrovnik is well served by flights from London and regional airports. Most are with low cost carriers or charter operators but British Airways fly from Heathrow.

There’s a good selection of yachts of varying ages, from 2 to 5 cabins. Catamarans as well as monohulls are available.

Note that for all charters in Croatia, in addition to a skipper with skippers certificate, someone on board must hold VHF radio license. For those lacking necessary qualifications to sail yourselves, skippers are available for hire.
