Montenegro Explorer flotilla

About the Montenegro Explorer flotilla

The Montenegro Explorer flotilla is for those wanting more time in this fascinating country than is possible on the one week route.

Quick Choices - Montenegro Flotilla
Base:Dubrovnik Difficulty: IntermediateAirport:
Dubr'k
Flights from: Gatwick, Heathrow, Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Belfast
Qualifications: to sail yourself: minimum RYA Day Skipper Practical or ICC plus VHF radio certificate. For Montenegro only, one other person with practical or theory skippers certificate
Other options: Skippers available

The route gives more time in the dramatic Gulf of Kotor than the one week flotilla. It also visits places further south. The duplicate stop at Cavat that used to affect Montenegro flotillas is no longer necessary.

There’s a great mix of ancient cities such as Kotor and Budva and possibly the world’s most modern marina town at Lustica. Stops vary from large bustling towns such as Tivat and sleepy fishing villages like Bigova.

The Dubrovnik start gives a chance to explore this beautiful historic city. There’s also a practical benefit- you can fly direct from several UK airports whereas there are as yet no direct flights from the UK to the Montenegrin bases.

Please note that recent rule changes mean that charters in to Monteegro require two skippers on board. However, for the second skipper, a number of theory certificates are acceptable if you don’t have a practical qualification

  • Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik is arguably one of the prettiest towns you will visit in Croatia but be warned it is overrun with tourists in July and August at which time the old town can be a very sweaty and aggravating place indeed!  Given a choice I would recommend an early or late season flotilla or bareboat charter if this is all you have come ...

  • Cavtat and Uvala Tiha
Cavtat and Uvala Tiha combine to create a small, laid back tourist village just south of Dubrovnik. It’s a great place to relax and watch the super yachts come and go on the customs quay or treat yourself to an ice-cream while promenading along the wonderful, shady paths that wind around the bays. Twice spared from destruction when war ...

  • Meljine / Zelenica
Meljine is a small holiday town just east of Hercog Novi. It is known for its fortress built in 1732 by the Venetians. This soon became home to the main military hospital for the area. Recovery was apparently aided by the holy water supply that flowed down from Savina church. Through the hospital no longer serves ...

  • Tivat
Tivat was a playground for aristocrats and landed gentry in the middle ages. In the mid 19th century it became a naval base first for the Austrians, then the Italians, Yugoslavs and the Russians. It’s now resuming it’s role as a popular holiday destination. The naval base is now rejuvenated as Port Montenegro, developed by a Canadian billionaire and ...

Perast is the oldest, best preserved and prettiest town in the area. Sandwiched between the steep hill of St Ilija behind and the water, two tiny islands lie just offshore. • Budva
Budva is Montenegro’s most visited holiday town. It’s the hub of Montenegro’s “Riviera”. The main attractions are the medieval old town (Stari Grad), several sandy and pebbled beaches and the nightlife. The area was hit by an earthquake in 1979, and substantial reconstruction was necessary. Fortunately, with the exception of the citadel, the old city was relatively untouched. This ...

With so many historic places in the area, Lustica Bay provides an extreme contrast. It is situated in the north east corner of Trašte Bay. Herceg Novi is, like most of Montenegro, undergoing something of a tourist boom. It seems to be weathering this better than some of its neighbours. It retains both it’s charm and much evidence of its history. Though Novi means new, this is only relative. The town in fact started life as a fortress in the 14th century. The old ...

More about the flotilla

The nearest airport is Dubrovnik, about 30 minutes drive away from the base, on the other side of the city. Optional airport transfers are available from the flotilla operator.

Dubrovnik is well served by flights from London and regional airports. Most are with low cost carriers or charter operators but British Airways fly from Heathrow.

There’s a good selection of yachts of varying ages, from 2 to 5 cabins. Catamarans as well as monohulls are available.

Note that for all charters starting in Croatia, someone on board must hold VHF radio license. For those lacking necessary qualifications to sail yourselves, skippers are available for hire.
