Cala de Canyamel / Cala de Canamel

Cala de Canyamel/Cala de Canamel is a lovely open bay overlooked by Cabo Vermey. Clear turquoise water over a sandy seabed makes this a delightful swim stop anchorage or, in the right weather, a wonderful overnight one for any flotilla holiday or bareboat charter.

The tiny town of Canamel nestles along the river bank and has an understated touristy feel to it. There is a good supermarket and a number of restaurants and bars to choose from. This is a laidback community compared with some of the larger resorts along the coast; no need to unpack to dancing shoes here.

Even if you only stop for lunch it is worthwhile pumping up the dingy to take a stroll to the Cuevas de Arta (Caves of Arta) which are a short walk from the tourist boat quay. These caves have a long history of proving refuge to various groups of people in times of need. They must have enjoyed the fabulous views from the cave entrance. Inside is also spectacular with stalactites and stalagmites up to 22m long. Follow the tracks and/or road out towards Cabo Vermey to find the caves. Tours cost 13€ for an adult and 7€ for a child (2015). Make sure you wear sturdy footwear as there are a lot of steps and stairs and bring a woolly jumper as the caves are pretty chilly!

There is plenty of space to anchor within the confines of Cala de Canyamel in reasonably shallow depths and the holding is excellent. However, bear in mind that the gently shelving quality that makes for a good anchorage also means that the swell can build up quickly here and make things untenable with onshore breezes.
