The large bay at Koukounares is ringed by a beautiful sandy beach which stretches about 1km around the bay. Hidden by the pines behind the beach is a lagoon. The other side of the lagoon is the holiday town of Koukounares. The beach is regarded as the best on Skiathos.
The area is a designated nature reserve, so development here is restricted. Sadly, this doesn’t seem to extend to the ubiquitous sun loungers and parasols which cover much of the sand that people are there to enjoy! It also means food supplies on the beach are limited. There are however plenty of tavernas, bars and shops in the town.
In the north east corner of the bay, where the lagoon flows out to the sea, there’s a small harbour, though there’s rarely room for more than a couple of small yachts. Most yachts therefore anchor at the west side, the centre usually being buoyed off for the water sports companies. These offer peddle boats, banana boats and water skiing. For those who prefer some land based entertainment, there’s a horse riding school in town.
You can also have you own water adventure, taking your dinghy up the channel and in to the lagoon.
