Achillion / Achilleion / Ahilio

Achillion is one of the larger and newer villages on the west side of the Gulf of Volos. The long seafront is lined with tavernas, bars, mini markets and holiday accommodation. Other than bareboat charter yachts and the odd flotilla, most visitors are Greeks. There’s a small beach if you fancy a swim, though there are bigger and better in the area. There’s a small marine museum containing a collection of local shells.

The current settlement is built on the site of the Byzantine city of Nicopolis but is only about 100 years old. The older settlement, Kalyvia Hamako, was several miles away. It was abandoned when the new village was built.

Many tourists are drawn by the trip boats that run from Achillion to Skiathos. However as most charter yachts will have started from there this isn’t much of an attraction for sailors! And the village is otherwise rather unremarkable. There’s nothing really wrong with the place but there are more interesting and attractive places in the area. It’s only real selling point is the long quay provides plenty of mooring space.
