Peristeri / Nisos Peristera

This island, just east of Alonissos offers a number of excellent sandy beaches. Peristeri is often described as uninhabited but there are in fact a few holiday homes and some fishermen’s refuges. The island is a bit drier than Alonissos, lacking the lush vegetation.

There are a number of anchorages available to charter yachts. Many are exposed to wind from one direction or another, so check the weather forecast before choosing. Some are best as lunch or swim stops only.

Peristeri Bay

The centre of the 3 bays on the south end of the island. The bay is surrounded by pines and olives, with a few fishermen’s cottages scattered through the trees. It provides good shelter from the prevailing northerlies with good holding. The Meltemi wind can send gusts down the hill in July and August and you’ll probably want to take a line ashore, not least because it gets busy.

Vasiliko Bay

This is on the west side, where the narrow neck of land joins the north and south of the island. It’s probably the most popular bay on the island with bareboat charters. Good holding and shelter and one of the few bays in the Sporades that gives protection in a southerly. Again prone to gusts over the hills in Meltemi season so get as close in to the north east cove as possible for maximum shelter.

The cove right at the north of the bay contains a shipwreck which youngsters will love. This was allegedly a vessel originally impounded in Alonissos which broke free of its moorings and made its way across the channel.

Klima Bay

A bay on the east side of the island. It’s a very pretty spot but only really tenable as an overnight stop in calm conditions.

There are other bays that are worth exploring though these are either small or no suitable for other than a lunch stop.
