Lycian flotillas | Sailing Choices

The Lycian flotillas sail from Fethiye. They are centred on Gocek Bay, only 8 miles long, but containing numerous inlets, many home to family run restaurants.

Gemiler: Gulets anchored between the island and the mainland

Each restaurant has its own attraction, be it Ramazan’s pide (mini pizzas) at Sarsala, Tomb Bay’s tombs and resident barber / masseur, Mohammed’s honey at Kapi Creek, or Ragip’s restaurant on a boat at 22 Fathom Cove. A little further afield are the abandoned village near Cold Water Bay, the ruins at Gemiler, and the long golden beach at Olu Deniz.

From Ekincik you can take the popular river trip, calling at the ruins of Caunos, the mud baths, Dalyan village, and the famous Turtle Beach, breeding ground of the loggerhead turtle. Fethiye and Marmaris are lively stops; try a Turkish Bath, shop in the bazaar or lounge on the beach, before dining in style.

FLOTILLA PRICES from FETHIYE

The Fethiye flotilla visits a number of bays blessed with nothing other than a restaurant. Many have their unique attractions. Tersane is renown for it’s ruins. Sarsala offers locally made pine honey.

At Tomb Bay you can walk up the hill to some ancient tombs. On your return you can relax with a massage or traditional Turkish shave on the beach.

Fethiye is much larger. It’s an interesting mix of the the ancient and modern. From the Lycian tombs cut in to the cliffs, through traditional Turkish baths to cartoonists on the seafront, there’s something for everyone. It’s an excellent place to pick up souvenirs for friends at home.

More About The Fethiye Flotilla

Embarkation is on Saturdays with the sailing starting next day. There’s a varied range of yachts on offer from 32 to 50 feet. These include a couple of catamarans. There’s a good supply of yachts but the newer ones tend to be in high demand. Book early if you want one of these.

The nearest airport is Dalaman. The transfer time to the base is around 45 minutes. The operator offers optional transfers.

My flotilla prices include the Transit Log, Comfort pack (including a starter pack of water, beer, soft drinks, crisps, tea & coffee, end cleaning, and bed linen), Flotilla Participation Fee, a comprehensive inventory including navigation equipment, and the services of the Lead Crew.

You can choose between lodging a traditional refundable type security deposit or paying an insurance waiver. Optional extras include outboard engine (included on catamarans), wi-fi, stand up paddle board and extra towels.

Some of the bays don’t have mains water or electricity. So later in the evening, when the generator is turned off, you may finish your meal by candlelight. You will sometimes need to shower on board due to limited water ashore.

The restaurants will provide you with fresh bread. For additional sustenance, a couple of the supermarkets now provide floating stores. These circulate around the bays so you can shop whilst at sea.

FLOTILLA PRICES from FETHIYE

The flotilla gets you away from tourist Turkey, to secluded bays, a number of which can only be reached by boat.

The bays each have their own character. Twenty Two Fathom Cove is home to one of the area’s great characters, Ragip. In the old days he used to run a restaurant in Cleopatras Bay. He was eventually imprisoned for operating without the correct paperwork (which he still denies).

Kapi Creek offers some stunning views and the chance to visit a traditional Turkish village. Cold Water Bay is so called because of the cold water springs which make for a refreshing dip. You can walk from there to an abandoned Greek village. It’s quite a moving sight.

More About The Gocek Bay Flotilla
